Keeping Pets Safe Under Anesthesia

General anesthesia is necessary for us to safely perform surgery on your pet. To ensure their health and safety while under anesthesia, we will:

  • Examine your pet from nose to tail and perform comprehensive blood work to check their health
  • Make sure they have not eaten within the last 10-12 hours, as this can cause them to aspirate during surgery
  • Provide the appropriate pain relief medication before, during, and after surgery to make sure they stay comfortable
  • Closely monitor their vitals to detect sudden changes

Caring for Your Pet After Surgery

Before your pet is discharged, we will take you into an exam room and answer all of your questions about their surgery. Next, we will give you a list of instructions that you can follow at home to ensure that your pet’s recovery goes smoothly. This may require outfitting them with an e-collar or close-fitting garment to keep the surgical site protected. We will also let you know if your pet needs a follow-up exam so we can check their progress. Be sure to call us at (239) 435-1222 if there is anything you need!
